Breaking News:Green Bay new corners in first round?Despite two months remaining for the 2017 NFL Draft kicks off, enough mock drafts have surfaced that have the Green Bay Packers selecting a player at virtually every defensive and many offensive positions. That underscores the challenges with projecting this particular franchise. While it has fewer flaws than most teams, the front office doesn’t always conform to conventional wisdom.
Still, sometimes a need becomes too glaring not to address early in the draft, and the Packers could certainly use an influx of cornerback talent given how the secondary struggled most of 2016. With that in mind, SB Nation’s draft guru Dan Kadar had the Packers select Washington cornerback Sidney Jones with the 29th overall pick in his latest mock.

The cornerback class is deep, but is it so deep that a team can take the fifth one off the board in a round and find value?
At least in this version of the mock draft, the Packers pass over über-athletic edge rusher Takkarist McKinley in order to select Jones. McKinley comes with some medical concerns — he supposedly plans to undergo shoulder surgery following the combine — but the defense needs an influx of pass rush given Clay Matthews’ rapid aging and the possible departures of Julius Peppers, Nick Perry, and Datone Jones.
While general manager Ted Thompson targets athletic pass rushers early in the draft, he has spent premium draft capital on cornerbacks on occasion. In 2015, he used his top two selections on Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins. Though each regressed last season, Thompson’s willingness to target the position before suggests that Washington’s Jones could become the team’s selection this year.
